Ambition.
Satisfaction is the enemy of ambition. Today is just a vehicle to arrive at a better tomorrow. And once you have arrived at tomorrow, tomorrow will just become the today that is simply a vehicle to arrive at the better tomorrow. Things can always be better. If you struggle with this and ambition then I have a few suggestions for you.
Learn how to be present to the moment. Cliché, I know. I think the biggest thing in this for me is to set aside time where you recognize that today is just today… The day that cascades into tomorrow. A day of plans and steps etc. — whatever you have for the day. Take the time to appreciate and accept that, maybe plan your course of action. And then lose yourself in the day. You’ve already thought about the things you want to do and the steps you want to take, so it frees you up to get lost in taking those steps.
The next way I’ve found to help myself continue forward is to draw energy from anything. I think MJ (Michael Jordan) is a great example of this. The guy would take any little thing and make it drive him. Someone talking smack. Someone said he couldn’t, so now he needs to. Somebody stepped on his shoes. The dude would create fire out of air and that fire would drive him. I think this is such a great characteristic to pick up. When we have something driving us forward, whether we have made it up or blown it up, it gets us there. Fast. Find something to look forward to. Find something to get pissed off about. Find someone to prove wrong. You will be surprised once you let go of your ego and latch into this sort of simple motivation and how powerful it can be. I’m fortunate enough to be foolish. I dream of so many things in the future that I think someday I just might have them.
Two Types of Envy
It is said there are two types of envy; good and bad.
The first type of feeling is inferiority, this motivates self improvement.
The second type is malicious envy. This motivates the envious to take good things away from others.
There are two basic determinants of the type of envy that will be experienced: The degree of belief that one has been treated unfairly and the belief that one’s disadvantage is one’s own fault.
The Invention of Nature
We generally view nature as separate from us. We objectify nature. To bring ourselves back we need to subjectify nature. We are part of a whole. Not top of the food chain.
The best way to learn about nature is to experience it.
· Actions are within your control, outcomes are not in your control.
· Do not invest in the outcome, invest in the process.
Hick’s Law
States that with every additional choice it takes more time to make a decision.
— the moral of Hick’s Law? Be patient in love. Haha
To Be Or To Do
John Boyd’s concept.
In the military system, John Boyd had the unfortunate experience of realizing that one day the path of doing the right thing and the road to success diverged.
“And you’re going to have to make a decision about which direction you want to go.” He raised his hand and pointed. “If you go that way you can be somebody. You will have to make compromises and you will have to turn your back on your friends. But you will be a member of the club and you will get promoted and you will get good assignments.” Then Boyd raised his other hand and pointed another direction. “Or you can go that way and you can do something — something for your country and for your Air Force and for yourself. If you decide you want to do something, you may not get promoted and you may not get the good assignments and you certainly will not be a favorite of your superiors. But you won’t have to compromise yourself. You will be true to your friends and to yourself. And your work might make a difference. To be somebody or to do something. In life there is often a roll call. That’s when you will have to make a decision. To be or to do? Which way will you go?”
Stay warm.
