Competency & Commitment.
(Originally written on October 30, 2022)
The best things in life are reserved for those who are committed.
You could be infinitely more competent and capable than the next person but if you aren’t committed, and they are, you will lose out every time. Commitment is the difference between getting there a half step early and a half step late. It separates the person who gets what they’ve always wanted and someone who talks about their dreams like they were never meant to actualize them.
Almost equally important is a person’s ability to communicate what they know.
The idea is that how well a person communicates can oftentimes be more important than how capable they are. For example: Two people are applying for a job. individual A has a 100% competency in a certain area. While individual B is only 70% competent in that same area. Although more competent – individual A only has the ability to communicate a little over half of what they know. Meanwhile, individual B is an excellent communicator and able to communicate their entire competency.
Individual B is chosen for the job and individual A is left scratching their head wondering why B was chosen.
This scenario is all too common today. Person B was chosen because they were able to communicate their competency better. And rightfully so. Commitment and communication are the separators.
So commit. To whatever you decide to pour yourself into. Learn better ways to communicate. Be a good human. Dream big, and never grow up. At least not on the inside.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I’ll leave you with a photo and a quote.
