The Antithesis.
“Allow them to be impatient… we’re fine.”
Words I said to my mom, as we waded through the sea of Sunday shoppers at Costco today…
~ Years ago, I worked at a CVS. I had a coworker, let’s call him Trevor. He was a great guy. Fun to work with, kind, a little intense — but it seemed to stem from a sense of responsibility. Long story short - he was the kind of guy you liked working with.
He was a manager and I was a front facing kind of person. When we’d work together, shifts would go smooth and everything would get done. But one day, he talked to me. He said, “You’re a great worker, but you lack a sense of urgency.” And for a while I tried to beat that into myself. To always act a little quicker, with more urgency. Because it wasn’t the first time someone told me that.
It’s something I’ve always struggled with. To emulate the same sense of urgency I see from everybody around me… Have you ever seen the movie “In Time” with Justin Timberlake? Basically, in the movie — time has become their currency. They buy things with it, and everybody stops aging at 25. So the rich live forever, and the poor are always rushing around living day to day. I’m not saying that I’m rich by any stretch. But I shouldn’t have to draw the parallels for you.
The thing is, I know I’m going to get there. I don’t have to speed to the next stop light. I don’t have to cut people off or yell and scream my way there. I don’t have to hurry any more than I was ever meant to. Because 1.) I know I will get it done. 2.) I know that the right time will come. and 3.) The cream rises to the top.
I am urgent when I have to be and I take my time when I must. And not every moment of your life needs to be lived on the edge of your seat. Take a moment and breathe. Allow life to come to you, like the ocean in a returning tide every once and a while.
Life is not this race, or this game of who can have the most crazy experiences or do the most things. Life is something you only get to do once, so it’s worth taking a second to look around. To do things at your own pace. To make the right decisions.
Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.
Stay sharp out there, and
Stay warm.
