The Tree Of Life
Imagine, standing at the base of a tree so wide that you can barely see its curvature. An encompassing canopy above head. Yggdrasil, known as the tree of life in Norse mythology, is said to house all nine realms of existence. Including the realm of gods and the realm of man.
That is to say that the realms are in some way connected. Just like most or all of us in a way. But let’s not get too deep in the sticks. I just think it’s an interesting thing to envision the most massive tree you can imagine.
Sunk Cost Fallacy
There’s something called a sunk cost. A sunk cost is a cost that you’ve already paid, such as time or effort. Even resources. It’s a cost that you can never get back. It’s gone — paid already.
The Sunk Cost Fallacy comes into play when you still consider those sunk costs in a future analysis. This is relevant in something like reselling an item. People generally base the cost that they sell the item at, compared to what they paid for it; instead of what the market cost is. The reality is, that once you have paid a sunk cost it’s something you just have to accept and forget.
If you consider sunk costs in future analysis, it can lead to a bias toward investing more. It’s natural to want something you’re invested in to succeed, or fetch a higher price. But that’s not always the case.
